On 20th September 2020, I attended the writing live stream hosted on Natalia Leigh’s channel and co-hosted with Brooke Passmore and Mandi Lynn.

For ages, I wanted to attend an AuthorTube writing livestream. So I was happy to see that one was planned at a suitable time for me.

For all of those who don’t know, a writing live stream is where AuthorTubers do a live stream (recording live) with them writing during writing sprints. A writing sprint is when you set a time to write and see how many words you can write in that time. For example, you write for twenty minutes.

What is so great about writing live streams is that the viewers (other writers) can talk to each other and the host via the live chat. You can even suggest writing sprint lengths to the host. Knowing that you are writing with writers from around the world is a great feeling — it makes the writing process feel less lonely.

The writing live stream with Natalia, Brooke and Mandi started at 5 p.m. (BST). One hundred and thirty-two people viewed the event — this number was when I checked; it could have eventually been more.

To get us all in the writing mood, we started with a 15-minute warmup. I managed to write 338 words of my novel during that sprint. We then had a break, talked about NaNo and our planned projects and shared our word count from the first sprint.

After that, we started our first official sprint. This sprint was for 20 minutes and 20 seconds — a random time length, I know. In that sprint, I wrote 553 words.

Once our sprint was up, we had another break — this time, something spooky happened. Someone saw Brookes door close by itself — she lives alone. A discussion then started about ghostly experiences (I loved this).

After our spooky discussion, we returned to the writing. We completed our final sprint, which lasted for 30 minutes. I managed to write 784 words — I was pleased with this, even though I now can write nearly 1000 words in 30 minutes.

So, in the one hour, five minutes and twenty seconds of writing, I wrote … (drum roll please) … 1,675 words. Yay me!

After the sprints, there was a ten-minute Q&A session. I didn’t have any questions to ask — I was too mentally drained to think of any — but I did enjoy listening to the hosts answer the questions the other viewers asked.

So, what did I think of my first writing live stream? I loved it. It was so much fun, and I felt motivated — I’m now a writing live stream junkie. I would suggest this to all writers, especially if you’re feeling stuck with your story because not only do you have people to write with, you also have people to talk to — it was nice to see all the encouraging comments.

Have you ever attended a writing live stream or hosted your own? Let me know in the comments below.

Stay safe and keep writing, folks!
