The Woman Who Went to Bed For a Year

What would happen if you tired of life and decided to stay in bed for a year? This is the idea behind the Sue Townsend novel The Woman Who Went to Bed For a Year.

A member of my writing group recommended this book to me; it was the book that inspired them to start writing. Before the recommendation, I had never heard of the author Sue Townsend, but now after reading this book I will be looking to read her other stories.

The Woman Who Went to Bed for a Year is a story about a woman called Eva Beaver. After packing her 17-year old twins (Brian Junior and Brianne) off to university, Eva decides she needs to take a break, and reaches out for the comfort of her bed, and decides to stay there. Throughout the story, several characters come into Eva’s new bed world, and soon stories of Eva being a problem-solving angel spreads throughout social media and the news, much to the annoyance of her husband, Brian.

The novel was quick and easy to read, and like what is written on the cover of the book, I did have a laugh out loud moment. I spent many of my nightly reading sessions chuckling to myself. One of the characters, Poppy, stood out the most to me because she reminded me of someone I knew. I could sympathise with Eva, and it made me reflect on life itself. It’s easy to spend so much time running around and before you know it the years have flown by, and then you are left wondering was it worth it.

Even though I enjoyed the book, I have to admit I was disappointed with the ending. I was left with too many questions, especially about the other characters. The plot also didn’t go the way I had hoped. I was waiting for one of the characters to do something that would add some drama since the character was mentioned a lot. Also, I’m not sure what Eva got from her year in bed. Did it change her? Was it a worthy break? Was she able to plan her next move? Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the book, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a book that is easy to read with laughter guaranteed.

Keep writing, folks!
