Keeping focused

Doubt has blocked me these past few weeks, but I’ve bounced back and feel ready and eager to go. I’ve pushed self-doubt aside and got my dream right there ahead of me, keeping me focused.

I’ve had a sort of an epiphany. I know, I don’t know what took me so long, but I’ve had a little word with myself. For so long I’ve said my writing dream is not realistic. However, I can’t pursue a dream if I keep telling myself that it is unrealistic. So I’m going to stop using the word ‘unrealistic’, and I’m going to fight to achieve my dream. Seeing my story ‘Thief among Friends’ go live has helped. It reminded me that I do have the skills to succeed. I have something and people like what I’m doing. It might not be perfect, and I still have a lot to learn, but it’s there. So to help me stay focused with my dream in mind, I’ve come up with a five-step plan. I’m going to make a poster and stick it on my wall, so every time I have a little wobble, I can look at that poster and regain my focus.

With my focus clear, I’m going to stop messing about with this novel, and get it done. I’m also going to attack my to-edit pile like Michael Myers attacks his victims. I need to get these stories submitted because this dream is too important to give up.

I’m reading Stephen King’s On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, which I’m enjoying so far. It’s interesting to see how he started out. It shows that not all authors are a success straight away. It takes time, perseverance, hard work, and love for the craft.

So the fight is on, and Nicole J. Simms is ready.

Keep writing, folks!
