On 7th May, my writing group and I went to the Museum of Cannock Chase’s VE Day event. As my writing group is writing a World War Two anthology, we thought it would be great for our research to go to this event, and we were proved right.

After a pleasant journey – thanks to Andy our driver of the group – we got out of the car and stepped back in time. We were met by a guard speaking in German. I did study German at school, but that was over ten years ago, so I had no clue what he was saying. For all we knew he could have been saying he wanted to cut off our heads. But on seeing the confusion on our faces he thankfully switched back to English. He then asked us if we wanted a ration book and identity card. I agreed to buy them because I wanted something for my memory box (I’m also a hoarder). The ration book was used to collect stamps every time you took part in an event; I nearly filled mine.

The event took place inside and outside of the museum. At the front of the museum, there was a choir singing 1940 songs, which really set the atmosphere. We first explored the inside of the museum where we could see Mrs Skivy’s cottage and the 1940’s home set. Then we were told that the Spitfire flypast was about to start. With this being the main reason that we came to the event, we rushed outside to find an ideal spot. We all looked in different directions trying to figure out when the Spitfire would appear, but when we heard that hum of the Spitfire we all got our cameras ready. I was able to get some great footage of the Spitfire flying over, which you can see in the video. It truly was an amazing experience, and one I won’t forget.

And just when we thought the day couldn’t get any better, Angela and I decided to learn how to do the Lindy hop. Now, I may be a pro at the Michael Jackson dance game, but doing the Lindy hop was something different. For some reason, I couldn’t get the steps, and when I did (and realised I had) I lost it again, but it was great fun. I do like to do random things every now and then.

We all had such a wonderful day. Thankfully the day stayed warm, and the sky stayed blue until it was time to go home. It’s group trips like these that make me really thankful that I have such a great writing group.
