Author visit - Sharon Bolton - Sharon and I

[Sharon and I]

Last Tuesday, I finally went to see Sharon Bolton talk about her new book and her journey as a writer. I arrived with three of her books, which I hoped she would sign, and prepared myself for an insightful talk. Not only did I go as a new fan, the Dead Scared book sealed the deal for me, I also went as a writer keen to see what life was like once you became a novelist, and any tips that could help me on my writing journey. Well, I’m happy to say I wasn’t disappointed.

The talk was held at Bleakhouse library and was part of the Black Country Libraries Big Book Fortnight event. By chance, I happened to come across this event and was amazed that one of the many authors that were coming to a library near me was Sharon Bolton. I had just finished reading her Dead Scared novel, which is part of the Lacey Flint series, and I was excited to read more of her books. So when I saw that I could meet the author I jumped at the chance and booked my tickets.

During the talk, it was interesting to find out that Sharon Bolton is also a horror fan and started out writing in that genre, but decided to write crime novels due to the popularity of that genre. This has made me think about my genre preferences. Would I be happy to write in another genre? At this point in my life, I am interested in crime but my heart lies with horror, but who knows I might even start writing romance novels. Hmm, that does seem very unlikely but you never know.

Author visit - Sharon Bolton - Signed copy of A Dark and Twisted Tide

I found it helpful to know that you don’t have to actually visit a location to write about it, but intense research is necessary. I have to admit, I am lazy where settings are concerned, so I do need to work on this for my stories. One big point that really stuck out was that Sharon never foresaw this life path. So it shows that you really don’t know what the future holds, and if you want to do something, then you go ahead and do it. You just need that passion.

Of course I couldn’t leave without getting all three books signed, this was my first book signing, and I managed to get a photo with the author. So overall a very pleasant and thought provoking evening. You never know, maybe one day, I will have my own author visit.

Have you read any Sharon Bolton books? If you have, then I would love to hear from you, so feel free to comment below.

Keep writing, folks!
