The End of NaNoEdMo

Did I reach my NaNoEdMo goal? The simple answer is no I didn’t. However, I don’t see that as a failure. The fact that I took part in NaNoEdMo and edited like a maniac shows that even though I didn’t reach my goal, I’m still a winner.

To be honest, I think my goal was too great. I planned to finish the second draft of my 120,000ish word novel in a month when it took me four months to write it in the first place. So as always, I did expect too much of myself. If I had stuck to the original NaNoEdMo goal of 50 editing hours, then I’m sure I would have reached that goal.

Over the years, I have learned that editing takes longer than the actual writing, so instead of punishing myself for not reaching my goal, I will celebrate how much editing I managed to do.

Would I try NaNoEdMo again? Yes, I definitely would because without it I don’t think I would have completed as much of my second draft as I have done.

What about the second draft of my novel? Well, I’m hoping to have that finished by the end of December. Then I’ll put it away for a month in preparation for my third draft. Well, that’s the plan.

Like NaNoWriMo, NaNoEdMo is good for those lacking motivation, those in need of peer support, those who need a deadline, or those who love a challenge. So writers, if you have a novel to edit, but you keep putting it off then I suggest you try doing NaNoEdMo. You don’t need to wait until the official NaNoEdMo date to take part. Choose a month, any month, and see how much editing you can do.

Keep writing, folks!
