My 2020 Writing and Reading Goals

It’s 2020! I still can’t believe that we have started not only a new year but also a new decade. But here we are. And a new year means new goals.

What about my 2019 goals? Well, you can read how I did in my ‘Reflection 2019 – My Writing Year’ blog posts.

As you know, if you’ve read my previous blog posts, 2019 didn’t go to plan. So, for 2020, I have a lot of catching up to do.

I recently read a blog post by Nicole Luttrell titled ‘Welcome to 2020’, which talks about choosing a word for the year. I found this post inspiring and decided that I too wanted to create a word for 2020.

So, after careful consideration, I decided the word for 2020 would be BALANCE. While I do want to catch up on my 2019 writing goals, I’m still recovering, so I mustn’t push myself too hard.

Also, I’m good at working hard, but I struggle to relax and take the time to do fun stuff, especially when I know I have work to do. So, this year, I want more balance in my life. I want to practise self-care and look after my mental and physical health. So 2020 is the year for balance, which will be helped by my continual journey into mindfulness.

As well as a word for 2020, I also have a motto for 2020. My 2019 motto was ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’. I did consider using the same motto for 2020, but after thinking it through, I realised that 2020 needed a new motto. So, my motto for 2020 is ‘When you can’t change the direction of the wind—adjust your sails’― H. Jackson Brown Jr.

Last year showed me that life doesn’t always go to plan. And there will be times where you will have to ‘adjust your sails’. So, this will be my motto for 2020.

Okay, I’ve discussed my motto and word for 2020. Now it’s time to get to the goals. So, here are my 2020 writing goals.

2020 Writing Goals

My 2020 Writing Goals

As you can see, I have a lot of writing goals—13 in fact. Now I would love to meet all of those goals, but I have to be honest with myself. The chances are I won’t achieve all of the goals—I do love aiming high and making things difficult for myself.

There are, however, some of the goals that need to be completed. Those goals are 1-3. I need to finish editing my novel—I’m sick of this being one of my goals. I want to publish my flash fiction collection, which should have been done last year. And I want to write my second standalone novel.

I do have some new goals for 2020. I’ve decided to work on my new supernatural horror series instead of my supernatural mystery series. The idea for the supernatural horror series came about from the novella I was writing. And the idea was so exciting, and it’s a similar genre to my standalone novels, that I’ve decided to work on this series first.

The other new goal is to learn more about screenwriting and playwriting, so I can start writing my own plays and screenplays. I have previously studied and researched playwriting (in 2018), but now I want to focus more on this area of writing. To break this goal down into more manageable chunks, I will first start with screenwriting, and then I’ll move on to playwriting. Even though this goal is for 2020, I do see it going into 2021.

2020 Reading Goals

My 2020 Reading Goals

As you can see, I’m doing another Goodreads challenge this year, but instead of 16 books, I want to read 25. I also have several reading lists to read. And I’ve decided to be more specific with my goals for reading poems and short stories. I do have a new reading goal for 2020: I want to start reading screenplays and plays to help me learn about this area of writing.

So, there you have it, my goals for 2020. As always, my goals are big, but I will take my time with them. And as long as I complete my main goals, I’ll be happy.

Do you have any writing goals for 2020? If yes, what are your writing goals?

Keep writing, folks!
